Treasure trove of old bottles unearthed


Dr Ian Beavis Curator of Tunbridge Wells Museum inspects part of a remarkable haul of more than 500 immaculately preserved Victorian bottles and pots unearthed by workers at the Southern Water wastewater Treatment Works in Tonbridge Kent The pots include early versions of ads for Boots the Chemists R Whites and Schweppes all dating from the 1890s. Southern Water donated the rarest examples to Tunbridge Wells museum and sold the rest for charity Picture shows Dr Beavis holding a ceramic egg used to keep ladies' hands cool while doing needlework and embroidery
