John Davis Long was born October 2j,1838, in Buckfield, Oxford county, Maine,and is the only surviving child of Zadocand Julia Temple (Davis) Long. Hisfather was a native of Massachusetts,who removed to Maine. He was de-scended from James Long, an early set-tler in North Carolina (died 1682). MilesLong, of the fifth generation, grandfatherof John D. Long, born in North Carolina,removed to Massachusetts. John Davis Long acquired his earlierliterary education in the public schoolsand the academy at Hebron, Maine, inthe latter fitting for college under theinstruction of the principal, Mark , afterward a member of Con-gress from Minnesota.
