Hehad announced to his friends a purpose to retire from theshrievalty at the end of his term to seek higher honors for whichhis discretion, ability, and popularity eminently fitted him. Forhis careful and discreet management of the duties of his officeduring the Ursuline Convent disturbances, he received thethanks of the Governor of the Commonwealth. He was cour-teous and affable, and a splendid specimen of manly grace. Hisdeath was universally
