The streams of this region, like nearly all other streams onthe earth, wash salt from the soil. The salt is formed by theweathering of certain kinds of rocks. The amount of salt carriedby a river during an entire season may be very small, but if theriver flows for ages into a basin having no outlet, much saltgathers there. Water standing in such a basin forms a salt lake. There are many salty valleys and salt lakes in the Great of these, Great Salt lake, covers an area of about twothousand square miles.
