Endoscope examination of the nose. Endoscopes are instruments that allow doctors to see inside the body and to perform relatively simple surgical procedures in a minimally-invasive way. Various types have been developed for specific sites: arthroscopes for joints; laparoscopes for the abdominal cavity and bronchoscopes for the lungs. The metal tube contains optical fibres that allow the surgeons an illuminated view of the inside of the body; it may also contain various remotely-controlled instruments, for example, for the collection of biopsy specimens. The endoscope's field of view is displayed on the video monitor in background.
