Close Up Detail of a Hedge Separating a Sodden, Muddy Field and its Lush Green Grass Neighbor. Torrington, Devon, England
Close up detailed view of the edge of two fields and the boundary hedge and ditch from above. The field on the left is sodden by this winters' unusually heavy rain. It is covered in tractor tyre marks and the Summer crop is just sprouting through the mud in regular rows. The problem with heavy agricultural machinery is that it can compact the soil increasing problems with drainage. These fields are on the banks of the River Torridge have been saturated by unusually heavy rain in the winter of 2015. The river Torridge which flows alongside starts its life on Woolley Moors between Bradworthy and Morwenstow. After completing a long loop it meets the Taw at Appledore then flows out into the Bristol Channel. It is famous for its setting in ‘Tarka the Otter’ by Henry Williamson and more lately in ‘Flow’ a novel for young adults by John Insull.
