The annual meeting of the Massa- chusetts Horticultural Society was held at Horticultural hall January 8. The retiring president, J. K. M. L. Farquhar, who retired after three years as chief executive, introduced Bichard M. Saltonstall, who made an excellent presidential address. He spoke of the suggested internal reconstruction of Horticultural hall. Three noted archi- tects had furnished estimates of the probable cost, which would be from $150,000 to $200,000. The directors, having considered the matter most care- fully, did not feel that the society should go to this expense. The land values where the present building stands have greatly increased of late years, and it would be a better policy to wait a few years and build a new hall which would fill the needs of the so- ciety, on another site. Mr. Saltonstall advocated greater efforts to increase the membership, which now is 930. He thought the aim should be to add 100 new members a year. For the big show to be held in May, 1916, special prizes amounting to over $1,500 had already been promised, additional to the sum of about $4^000 on the schedules issued.
