A woman walks along a Tang dynasty style corridor at the Silk Road Dunhuang Hotel Gansu Province China
Dunhuang is located near the historic junction of the northern and southern silk roads that skirted the Taklamakan desert to the west. It was the military headquarters for the Chinese operations in their western regions, and the centre of trade between China and its western neighbours during the days of the Silk Road. Dunhuang became the largest complex of ancient Chinese art and a major centre of Buddhism, the religion brought to China via the Silk Road by Buddhist monks from India.
