Malcesine, Veneto, Italy: outer wall of the Castello Scaligero, a castle on cliffs overlooking Lake Garda. The castle came under the control of the Della Scala or Scaliger family in the late 1200s and was rebuilt by them in the 1300s. The first fortified building on the Castello Scaligero site was probably built by the Lombards but once it had passed into the hands of the mighty Scaliger family it was extensively rebuilt by them and, along with other castles, served to exert the Scaligers’ control over Lake Garda. The Castello Scaligero would be the Scaligers’ residence from 1277 until 1387 and the Scaligers’ changes to the building give the castle the appearance it has today. From 1387 to 1403 the castle was occupied by the Visconti Dukes of Milan and then the castle’s ownership was contested by the Venetian Republic and the German Empire. In 1513 it was successfully besieged by a Venetian force and stayed in Venetian hands until the 18th century. It was briefly occupied by the French in 1797 and then by Austrian troops in 1798. From 1805 to 1815 the castle was part of the Napoleonic Kingdom of Italy before falling back under Austrian control in 1848 where it remained until 1866; in that year it became part of the Kingdom of Italy. In 1902 the castle was declared a national monument. Malcesine is a medieval town on the eastern shore of Lake Garda.
