Sugar accumulation in nerve cells. Light micrograph of a section through nerve cells (neurones) from a patient with mucopolysaccharidosis, showing the accumulation of mucopolysaccharide sugars (dark dots). This is a metabolic disease where one or more of the enzymes that break down such sugars are either not produced, or are not functional. The accumulation of the sugars causes tissue damage and impairs organ function. Magnification: x250 when printed at 10 centimetres wide. Human tissue.
