. A history of art in ancient Egypt . Fig. 247.—Perspective of the principal hall in the Great Temple ; from Horeau. to a third chamber, as wide as the second, but only lo feet this the innermost parts of the speos are reached ; theyconsist of three small chambers, those on the left and right beingvery small indeed, while that in the centre, the adytum, is about13 feet by 23. In the middle of this chamber was an altar, ortable for offerings; at the back of it a bench with four seatedstatues. The walls of both temples are covered with pictures likethose of Luxor, Karnak, and the Ramesseum. They represent. The Temple under the New Empire. 417 the battles and triumphs of Rameses, and the king seated uponthe laps of goddesses, who act as the tenderest of nurses. Besides the halls which form the main body of the temple, theplan shows eight lateral chambers, some perpendicular to themajor axis of the building, others falling upon it obliquely. Severalof these do not seem to have been finished. There are indi-cations that they were utilized as depositories for the objectsworshipped in the temple. We have now briefly noticed the principal rock-cut temples inEgypt and Nubia. Neither in plan nor in decoration do theymaterially differ from the temples of wrought masonry. Theelements of the building are the same, and they are arranged inthe same order—an avenue of sphinxes when there is room forit, colossi before the entrance, a colonnaded court, a hypostyle hall
