Extinct volcanic crater. View of an extinct volcanic crater, or caldera (known as Caldera Blanca), on a fissure zone on Lanzarote, Canary Islands. This crater is part of a small range called the Montanas del Fuego. A fissure zone is a line of weakness in the Earth's crust. Magma from deep in the Earth can well up and erupt over the surface. The blackened area surrounding the craters is made up of solidified lava.
