There have been several treatises written on this trouble and a number of theories as to its probable cause given. But it is a fact, never- theless, that even under the most per- fect climatic conditions it will appear. Your temperature and general treat- ment seem to have been "all -right. Tomatoes under glass are better kept a little on the dry side, at least in winter and spring. They succe^ best in a limited rooting space. If they can fill the beds or benches well with roots before the fruits are set, all the better. Top-dressings to keep plenty of live, active roots at work, with an occasional soaking of liquid manure, are what they like. A liberal mulch of cow manure, once the fruit is all set, is beneficial. Remember that they must have a dry atmosphere. Given that, there is little chance for rot to develop. At one time it was believed that the calyx adhering to the fruit caused this rot. I,
