Ectropion and chronic conjunctivitis. Close-up of an eye showing chronic conjunctivitis caused by ectropion. Ectropion is a turning outwards of the eyelid, which causes its inner surface to be exposed. This leads to problems with the flow of tears (which constantly clean the eye normally), and chronic conjunctivitis (inflammation of the lining of the eye). Ectropion is caused by a loss of tissue elasticity and weakness in the muscles surrounding the eye, usually due to old age. Treatment includes minor surgery to tighten the lid with a \tuck\". The conjunctivitis can be treated with antibiotics if it is infected or with corticosteroids if it is not."
