Volcanic rocks at the Lemptegy volcano. Puy de Lemptegy is an ancient volcano in the eroded Chaine Des Puys volcanic hills of the Auvergne region of France. The Lemptegy volcano last erupted about 32,000 years ago. These rocks are erosion-resistant structures known as volcanic plugs. Layers of volcanic rock and ash (black) can be seen in the surrounding, eroded landscape. Across top, trees and other plants are growing in a sandy layer of topsoil.
