Sattentau. Portrait of Dr Quentin Sattentau in 1994, French AIDS researcher at the Immunology Centre of the CNRS (Marseille Luminy). Here, Sattentau is seen in his laboratory; on the micro- scope screen are T-cells infected with the AIDS (Acquired Immune Deficiency Syndrome) virus. Sattentau is researching \antisense\" treatment against AIDS. The AIDS virus inserts a genetic code into T-cells of the human immune system, instructing these cells to produce virus proteins. \"Antisense\" treatment blocks this viral genetic code by implanting \"antisense\" synthetic material in T-cells. Sattentau also researches CD4 receptor sites on T-cells to which the AIDS virus attaches."
