Dyson sphere. Conceptual artwork of a spherical structure surrounding a planet and its star, representing a Dyson sphere. This concept is named after the US physicist Freeman Dyson, who advanced the idea in a paper published in 1960. He suggested that advanced civilisations would build orbiting structures to harness the power of their sun, and that such structures could eventually form a shell that would absorb much or all the energy from the sun. This would alter the light seen to be emitted from such star systems, with an increase in infrared radiation compared to the normal radiation observed.
