There are various makes of filters for laundry pur-poses, of which the pressure type of filters is that usu-ally adopted. This type of filter permits the connectionof the water supply to it, and the supply of filtered waterpasses directly from it, filtering the water under fullpressure as needed. The principle employed in all ofthese filters is the same. It consists in passing thewater through a filtering substance, usually of pulver-ized quartz. They usually have means for feeding 220 —. The principal merit in any filter is a thoroughmeans of washing the filtering substance. This sub-stance becomes charged with the impurities v/hich itcollects from the water, and the impurities must bewashed out, or the filter would soon become makes of filters are provided with a means ofwashing by reversing the current of water and break-ing up the filtering bed by forcing the water from thebottom up through the top. As the water is intro-duced into the bottom of the filter it disturbs the par-ticles of sand and carries off the impurities, leaving thesand clean. The ^STew York Filter Co. makes a filterof this kind, which is shown in Fig. 72. The Bowdenfilter, shown in Fig. 73, is another. There are other makes of filters which have a me-chanica
