THE JOHN CRERARLIBRARY General Statement Establishment of the School The School of Mines is a state educationalinstitution, and is at the present almost whollymaintained by appropriations of the State Legis-lature. It is endowed with 40,000 acres of SouthDakota land, a grant from the federal govern-ment. It receives a comparatively small incomefrom the rental of these lands, which are, how-ever, steadily increasing in value. The schoolis under the Regents of Education. The regents,five in number, are appointed by the governor,confirmed by the senate and have control of thevarious public institutions of learning maintainedwholly, or in part by the state as state institu-tions.
