In 1842 he was elected Lord Rector of the University of Glasgow, took a leading position in the memorable struggle of the Scotch Church, and brought before the House of Commons the petition of the great evangelical body on the subject of non-intrusion, and for their independence in spiritual matters, as guaranteed to them by the Revolution settlement, and recognised in judicial decisions in Maule was the first member of the Whig Government of 1841 who took a part in the agitation for Free Trade.
