Bypass graft techniques. Artwork of two types of grafts used in bypass surgery. A femoropopliteal bypass (top) and an aortobifemoral bypass (bottom) are seen. If the femoral artery (thigh) becomes partially blocked, usually due to cholesterol deposits (atheromas), a femoropopliteal bypass is used. This is harvested from elsewhere in the body, and grafted to connect the femoral artery to the popliteal artery (thigh). If both femoral arteries have atheromas, then an aortobifemoral bypass is inserted. This is a synthetic tube (white) that connects the lower aorta to the femoral arteries, replacing the blocked sections.
