Youare recommended in the pamphlet to which I referredin the beginning to take long breaths, to breathe throughthe nose. These are two most important injunctions, and are very often forgotten. I remember many yearsago reading a book by an author whose name I do notremember, but the name of the book was Shut yourMouth. It was not a very polite title, but the bookwas very interesting. It showed what valuable resultsarose from breathing through the nose, and pointed outthat the nose was intended for purposes of example, it filters the air. Those present at my. Dust Exhibits, Prepared by Dr. Houston, showing howthe Living Germs in Dust Grow and Increase. These Exhibits are in shallow, glass dishes with glass lids, in whichhad been placed a little sterilised nutrient gelatine. When the gelatineis exposed to the dusty air by removing the lid for a few seconds someof the dust particles, which are very minute living plants, fall upon thegelatine, and after some hours may be seen to have developedcolonies on the surface of the gelatine. A plate, for example, exposed to the pure air on Bray Head showed no colonies, while oneexposed to the air on a dusty road showed many. A plate exposed tothe air of a breakfast room in the early morning showed few colonies, but another one, exposed after the room had been swept, proved thatthe dirt had been largely removed from the carpet to the air, and thatmuch of it was living.
