Gastric metaplasia in the duodenum, endoscopic view. Metaplasia is a change of cell type in a region. Here, the normal epithelial cells of the duodenal bulb (the first part of the small intestine, connecting to the stomach), have been replaced (at left) by cells similar to those found lining the stomach. This is usually due to the stomach releasing excessive amounts of acid into the duodenum. Metaplasia occurs to prevent acid damage to the underlying tissues, as stomach lining cells are resistant to its effects.
