Forbes Benignus Winslow (1810-1874), British physician, sitting at a table with an escritoire, holding a quill pen. Winslow was one of the most contentious psychiatrists of his time. He grew up in asylums run by his father, and then spent his career trying to persuade the law courts that crime and alcoholism were mental illnesses. He also worked on solving crimes by Sherlock Holmesian methods, and anticipated modern biochemical psychiatry by advocating the study of brain chemistry pathology. Winslow travelled to the USA to serve as an expert witness in several court cases involving the insane. This is a daguerrotype, prepared by Mathew Brady's studio between 1844 and 1860.
