Vintage portrait of bare-knuckle boxer Tom Hyer (1819 - 1864) - heavyweight Champion of America from 1841 to 1851.

Vintage portrait of bare-knuckle boxer Tom Hyer (1819 - 1864) - heavyweight Champion of America from 1841 to 1851. Hyer, from New York, was recognised as champion following a 101 round fight with Country McCloskey (aka George McChester and John McCleester) on September 9 1841 at Caldwell's Landing, New York. He defended the title against Yankee Sullivan (c1811 - 1856) at Still Pond Creek, Maryland, on February 7 1849 - beating Sullivan in 16 rounds. Hyer, who is generally regarded as the first Champion of America, retired from prizefighting after other bouts failed to materialise. Portrait circa 1879, based on an 1849 daguerreotype.
