Elephant anatomy. 18th-century journal page showing elephant anatomy, including the jaw bones (lower right), the ear bones and organs (upper left), the brain cavity (lower centre), and the uterus (lower left), and the proboscis (bottom). The artworks accompanied a lengthy description of the bones of an elephant which died near Dundee, Scotland, on 27 April 1706. This page is from volume 5 of the 1734 edition of 'The Philosophical Transactions', an abridged collection of papers from the Royal Society. The original papers were published by the surgeon Patrick Blair in volume 27 (1710-11) of 'Philosophical Transactions'.
