Photograph by David Coleman. The USS Yorktown (CV-10) is a historic World War II aircraft carrier preserved at Patriots Point Naval & Maritime Museum in Charleston Harbor, South Carolina. Commissioned on April 15, 1943, the USS Yorktown, an Essex-class carrier, was named in honor of the USS Yorktown (CV-5) lost at the Battle of Midway. Known as the "Fighting Lady," the Yorktown participated significantly in the Pacific offensive from late 1943 to 1945, earning 11 battle stars and the Presidential Unit Citation for her service. In the 1950s, the Yorktown was modernized to operate jet aircraft and re-designated as an anti-submarine carrier. The ship served during the Vietnam War and was involved in the recovery of the Apollo 8 astronauts in 1968. Decommissioned in 1970, the Yorktown became the centerpiece of Patriots Point in 1975, where it now serves as a museum ship. Patriots Point Naval & Maritime Museum, home to the USS Yorktown, is a premier naval museum in the United States, featuring historic ships, aircraft, and exhibits that honor the bravery and sacrifice of the military. The USS Yorktown is a significant part of this collection, drawing history enthusiasts, veterans, and tourists to Charleston Harbor.
