Kenshun-mon Gate with red maple trees, Kyoto Imperial Palace, Kyoto, Japan

The current Kyoto Imperial Palace was reconstructed in 1855 after it had burnt down and been moved around Kyoto many times over the centuries. It was the residence of the Imperial Family until 1868 when the capitol was moved from Kyoto to Tokyo. The Kenshun-mon Gate is one of six entrance gates to the Imperial Palace, originally used for ministers of state, the empress and the dowager empress. It is a similar architectural style to the Kenreimon. and the traditional ball game Kemari, dating back to the Heian period (794 to 1185), was played in the square you can see in front of it.
