As I have toldsome of you in former talks, the womb is designedas a nest for the babe during Its process of de-velopment from the egg or ovule. It lies in thecenter of the pelvis, or lower part of the bodycavity, In front of the rectum and behind andabove the bladder. It is pear-shaped, with thesmall end downward, and is about three incheslong, two Inches wide and one inch thick. It con-sists of layers of muscles enclosing a cavity which, II Ill CO I- z<^ if U QQ DI- Q. o. 12 ANATOMY AND PHYSIOLOGY owing to the thickness of the walls, is compara-tively small. This cavity is triangular in shapeand has three openings,— one at the lower end ormouth of the womb into the vagina and one ateach side, near the top, into the fallopian womb, or uterus as it sometimes is called, isnot firmly attached nor adherent to any of thebony parts. It is suspended in the pelvic cavityand kept in place by muscles and ligaments. Asthe muscles and ligaments are elastic, the wombslightly changes its position with different move-ments of the body. Normally, it is inclined for-ward, resting on the bladder; so you sec, a fullbladder will push it backward, while a full rectumand intestines tend to push it forward and down-ward. The lower end or mouth of the womb opensinto the vagina, a distensible and curved musculartube, which helps to support the womb and alsoconnects it with the external parts. The vagina isabout three
