The ex-periment only postponed the real solution of the problemof meeting the financial needs of the State, and still furthercomplicated it. Later governments had to devise newmeasures, and these included at least a partial repudiation. 344. The Beginning of a Long War.—^From this daterevolutionary France drifted rapidly into a war with Europewhich scarcely ceased until the battle of Waterloo.
