Bone marrow transplant: doctor harvesting donor bone marrow, used for the treatment of severe aplastic anaemia & types of leukaemia. Genetically-compatible marrow is sucked up through large bore needles from punctures made into the iliac crests - the ridges of bone at top and back of the pelvis. Harvested marrow is filtered & prepared for infusion into the recipient's bloodstream, following pretransplant conditioning with chemotherapy or whole body irradiation. Such conditioning aims to destroy active leukaemia cells & disable the recipient's own immune system & thus prevent graft rejection.
