The combination ofinspection pits and pneumatic tubes will save their cost manytimes over at nine-tenths of the large engine terminals of thecountry. It might be well to say a word in regard to the layout oftracks, etc. At small points handling from fifty to one hundredengines per day one pit will be sufficient. At larger points twopits may be needed. It is often better to provide two inspectionpits, even at the smaller terminals, in order to furnish a meansfor quickly passing shifting engines on to the ash pits withoutthe unnecessary delay which would be occasioned if they wereblocked in with a number of road engines and held until the Some Engfine House Auxiliaries. 79. 8o Proceedings Railway Club of Pittsburgh. latter could be inspected. The shifters, as a rule, come to theengine house twice a day to have their fires cleaned and to takea supply of coal, water and sand, and as their running speedis low and their work not continuous, it is hardly necessary togive them the same careful inspection required by road by-pass method of sending the shifters over one inspectionpit during certain hours of the day, usually around six oclockin the morning and evening, or else at noon and midnight, andreserving the other pit for road power, will be found a decidedtime and money saver. The different shifting engines can bekept track of by the head inspector and stopped for a thoroughlooking over at weekly or semi-weekly intervals. The facilities to be provided at engine house inspection pitsshould receive careful consideration, as a satisfactory equipmentat this point will repay large dividends on its cost.
