Frog Beetle, Sagra sp.
Frog Beetle Sagra sp. The frog beetle gets its name from its large back legs. These are not used for jumping but are used in defense. The tip of the legs are armed with a sharp spine and the powerful back legs are used to drive the point into any attacker. Frog beetle larvae are a major pest on yams and do serious damage by forming galls inside the plant stems. The stems are then destroyed when the adult beetle emerges.
