On the elevation (346) LOCOMOTIVE APPLIANCES. 347 view (Fig. 2) is shown a cast-steel bracket riveted tothe under side of the drawbar, to which a slottedhanger, in which the coupling spring rests, and achain arm to support the coupling head, are bolted. The gaskets are so placed in the head that neitheris touched by the opposite one until the coupling ismade. This protection is effected by a tongue andgroove, on which tongue the face rides until the gas-kets are in position to register, when the tongue dropsinto the Elevation Fig. 2. Automatic Air and Steam Coupler. The outer end of the coupling head, having Vand wedge-shape guides, is directed both verticallyand horizontally by the outwardly bent spring onthe opposing members. This coupling spring per-forms the double function of guide and clamp to holdthe head firmly together when coupled. As will be seen on the elevation views, the headsare tapped to receive the air pipes, to which connectionis made to the train and signal pipes by a short hose. The steam attachment is so arranged that it can 348 LOCOMOTIVE APPLIANCES. be readily removed or attached without affecting theair connections. An automatic drip at the lowestpoint of the steam attachment provides for all conden-sation. As will be seen on the plan views, the slotted hangeris provided with a spring buffer which positivelyinsures the air coupling under all conditions wherethe car couplers will operate, and which maintainsthe coupling point of the air coupler in advance of thecar coupling
