Peat is an organic material that forms when plant debris decomposes in anaerobic (airless) conditions, such as in a waterlogged area like a marsh. Peat can be mined and used both as a fuel and as a fertiliser. Photographed in September in Sutherland county, in the Highland region of Scotland.
