The local weed inspector for tin1 district was called from time to tunc to see that the farmer did not allow tin- weeds to grow, ami in cases of negligence or other disregard of the Weed Act, he gave instructions to have the weeds destroyed before they wenl to seed. Weed inspectors are sometimes itii : , ,i severely, but, it' they were taken off for a couple of years, the result would be serious. While many of the annual weeds are dc-creasing, it is obvious that soi f the more pernicious kinds are increasing, especially the peren- nials. This may be somewhat clue to the fact that the attention of the inspectors lias been almost wholly occupied with certain weeds .-neb as Stinkweed and other plants of the drifting or tumbling habit. One perennial that is making alarming advancement is the Canada Thistle. This plant thrives during we\ years, and is very difficult to i radicate then, owing to the necessity of killing the underground root- stock, which can be successfully accomplished only during lone-, dry, hot periods. This year, the Department made a vigorous campaign to have all Canada Thistles cut before they went to seed, and from the reports received, n e bel ieve I hat the work was a >um>s. Perennial Sow Thistle i- also making itself noticeable during the past few vears, and unless drastic measures are used to cheek its spread, it will become a greater menace than the Canada Thi
