Hugo Schweitzer (1861-1917), German-US chemist. Schweitzer studied at Breslau and then obtained his doctorate at the University of Freiburg in 1884. In 1889 he arrived in the USA where he found work with the US subsidiary of the German pharmaceutical company Bayer. He rose to become head of its New York department. He became a US citizen but when World War I broke out in 1914 he advocated on Germany's behalf. Allegations were made that he was a secret agent for Germany.
