Shepherds preparing lunch and a camping site.

Chhitkul is the last village on the Indo-Tibetan border and after the first military check point (about 4kms away from the town) no one is allowed to venture any further without a govt permit. No one but the shepherds. Some of them travel for as long as four months continuously. The party consists of at least four shepherds and four dogs. Two stay back to prepare the campsite for a night with all the previsions and the other two spend the day with the flock. The herds can be as large as five hundred sheep and may also contain a few goats and cows. Roughly about 23kms beyond the military check point, the road becomes a trail and remains it for the rest of the route up to the border with virtually no human contact apart from the occasional military check posts. The shepherds in this part of the world are the true wonders, the true wayfarers.
