Uterine tumour. Sectioned gross clinical specimen of a uterus containing a large leiomyoma (red swelling, right). A leiomyoma is a benign (non-spreading) tumour of smooth muscle, which may occur in various parts of the body, most often in the small intestine; when it occurs in the uterus it is termed a fibroid. Fibroids are a fairly common condition, affecting 30-40% of women over the age of 30. They often produce no symptoms. Fibroids which are causing bleeding or discomfort can be surgically removed. In rare cases, leiomyoma may progress to form a malignant tumour (leiomyosarcoma).
