Brain Areas Affected by Alzheimer's Disease

Color enhanced coronal (frontal) MRI (magnetic resonance imaging) image of the brain, showing the regions of the brain most severely affected in Alzheimer's disease. The temporal lobes which are the most reddish color are involved with memory. The other affected areas appear as light brown. The parietal regions at the top of the image on both sides are also severely involved in this disease. The pattern of abnormality described above is suggestive of Alzheimer's disease but not definitive. The changes are somewhat non-specific. MRI is a non-invasive technique to image the brain or other parts of the body.
