Various forms of such caphave been devised and used fromplain wooden pillow blocks to elaboratelypacked and cushioned caps of steel and accompanying cut shows a pneumaticcushion cap which has been tried out success-fully in actual pile driving. Referring to the drawing, it will be seenthat this cap consists of an upper cylindercasting and a lower piston casting. Thecylinder casting is hollowed out or dished ontop to receive a block of wood, which receivesthe blow of the hammer, and also has onopposite sides flanges which engage the guides.
