Great Siege of Gibraltar (21 June 1779 to 7 February 1783). Third unsuccessful siege by Spain since the loss of the territory. The blockade was led by Martín Alvarez de Sotomayor (1723-1819). The sea blockade was considered insufficient, so in 1782 Louis Berton de Balbe de Quiers, Duke of Crillon (1717-1796), was appointed as commander of the besieging army. Siege of Gibraltar by the Duke of Crillon. "Glorias Españolas" (Glories of Spain). Volume IV. Published in Barcelona, 1890.
