Bacterial lung infection. Computer artwork showing rod-shaped bacteria (bacilli, green) on the surface of the alveoli (spheres) of the lungs. The alveoli are the areas where gases are exchanged between the air in the lungs and the blood. Bacteria like these cause lower respiratory tract infection (LRTI), which is known as bacterial pneumonia. Pneumonia can also be caused by viruses, fungi, parasites, and chemical or physical injury to the lungs. Severe LRTIs are treated by prescribing a course of antibiotics.
