Photosensitivity. A skin rash on the front of a woman's neck caused by a photosensitive reaction to sunlight. Photosensitivity is an abnormal reac- tion to sunlight caused by certain chemicals that have been eaten or applied to the skin. Examples of such substances, called photosensitizers, are drugs, dyes, chemicals used in cosmetics, and plants such as buttercups, parsnips and mustard. The condition affects only certain people and is thought to be caused by allergy to compounds produced when sunlight reacts with the photosensitizer. Treatment involves avoiding the photosensitizer (which was unknown in this case) and staying out of bright sunlight.
