Southport, Merseyside, UK. 14th April, Hamilton, UKIP Deputy Chairman (previously a controversial Conservative MP) addressing a members pre-election meeting held in the Royal Clifton Hotel. Southport has been earmarked by Ukip as a seat that “interests them greatly”, being a 4-way marginal, in the lead-up to the General Election. Southport is a place where Ukip in the past has come a number of close seconds, but has not yet made a break through in Council elections.
There are deep concerns in the ranks of Ukip's leadership about Mr Hamilton's role in the party. His effort to return to Parliament for Ukip was a personal battle for Mr Hamilton who was drummed out of the House of Commons in 1997 after 14 years as an MP when he lost the safe Tory Tatton seat after the cash for questions scandal. Mr Hamilton was left with a reported £2million legal bill after he failed to overturn a libel defeat against Mohamed Fayed which had claimed Mr Hamilton accepted money to table Parliamentary Questions. Mr Hamilton and his wife Christine always denied wrong doing. In her 2005 autobiography “For Better for Worse” Mrs Hamilton disclosed that the Inland Revenue had examined Mr Hamilton’s accounts after the Fayed case and concluded “that Fayed had not paid Neil cash for questions”.
