He was for a numberof years secretary of the Fayette CountyAgricultural society and has been a memberof the Uniontown public school board for thepast ten years. Mr. Hopwoods politicalconnection has been that of an active workerin the Republican party. Shortly after at-taining his majority he was elected secretaryof the county committee and was chairmanof that committee in 1882, 1883 and 1886 he was a candidate for district attor-ney, but was defeated by D. M. Hertzog, byforty-three votes. He was a candidate againfor the same office in 1893 and polled a votenumbering some hundreds in excess of his. He was a candi-date for congress in 1894 and received theendorsement of Fayette county, but failed tosecure the nomination. He was one of the origi-nal promoters and stockholders and is nowmanager and secretary of the board of direc-tors of the Uniontown Street Railway Co.
