These andmany other undesirable features werepresented which called forth from thegeneral manager the remark that it wasa very odd state of aflfairs for an out-sider to be so much more familiar withconditions on the road than their ownmen and that brakes as good as theirneighbors must be had. The generalmanager having assumed so favorablean attitude, my assistance was volun-teered and which was accepted, he, in 7,-. __ CRANK AXLE OF NORTHERN PACIFIC ENGINE turn, offering every resource regardlessof expense looking to a revamping ofthe brake apparatus. The first move made was to resusci-tate a number of engineers brake valves, brought to our attention by the store-keeper, which had long reposed in thestorehouse and arrange for their appli-cation to engines going through the backshop in lieu of the standard three-waycocks, removal of blind gaskets fromthe pump governors; changing thedriver brake pistons from pull to push;in short, inaugurating such work thateach engine coming from the shop wouldbe provided with the most approved ap-paratus. This work having been got wellIndcr way, the second point of vantagewas the car shops, where plans were for-mulated for increasing the leverage ofpassenger train equipment to a propermaximum; consignment to the scrapheap of decrepit brake beams, light rods,
