Sonic boom research. F-15B aircraft in flight testing the effectiveness of a Quiet Spike (black extension at left). This is an instrument used to reduce and control a sonic boom, the shock caused by a supersonic (faster than the speed of sound) flight of an aircraft. The Quiet Spike streamlines the tip of the aircraft, reducing the noise.
