It is with shameone has to admit that such things were not only jjossible under the convictsystem, but that they actually took place in the penal establishments ofVan Diemens Land and Australia until the exposure of these inhuman out-rages led to their discontinuance. Had the British government and peopleof a past generation been sooner apprised of them, it is only just to theirfeelings of humanity to believe that drastic measures would have been takenat a much earlier period to pimish those who were responsible for these atroci-ties, and to reform the transportation system. More convicts were sent to Van Diemens Land than anywhere else;. George Street, Sydney 244 THE COLONIAL WORLD [1831-1834 ]the stations there were more romantically situated and isolated to an extentthat removed them from public supervision, and permitted abuses to existwhich might have been checked if Macquarie Harbour, for instance, hadbeen nearer to the capital. Van Diemens Land gained a greater notorietythan any other colony in connection with the system of transportation, andthe desperate escapes which were made from its prisons invested the colonywith a degree of interest and attention specially its own. The capital itselfwas a hotbed of all sorts of crime and iniquity in the days of Governor Sorell,one of the earliest governors, and for years afterwards. It was quite a commonthing for officers and others to keep female convicts as their mistresses, andvice and immoral
