Infected toe amputation scar. Close-up of the foot of a 69 year old man showing the infected scar left after the amputation of his second toe. The toe was amputated (surgically removed) as its blood supply was cut off by peripheral vascular disease (PVD). This would have caused fast- spreading gangrene, which would have meant the whole foot or even the entire leg would have had to be amputated. PVD is usually caused by atherosclerosis, narrowing of the arteries due to fatty deposits on their inner walls. In this case, the atherosclerosis was due to heavy tobacco smoking.
